Tonight at 6:30, Humboldt County residents can tune in to channel 12 to catch a glimpse of the progress made in phase one of Access Humboldt’s Digital Rio Dell project, through the power of telecasting.
The first live telecast will take place in front of Rio Dell’s Fire Hall, during Wildwood Days’ “Fireman’s Night.”
Launching of the project began in March, with the installation of wireless broadband Internet service in Rio Dell City Hall. Access was later added for the library and fire station, with initial service beginning on May 1.
The project is intended to serve as a collaborative model, geared for public, education and government access, or PEG.
It also brings Humboldt County’s first redundant broadband municipal connection online, alleviating problems caused by fiber optic line breaks.
A similar project is in the works for Eureka.
Access Humboldt partnered with several local entities to make the project possible, including Carlson Wireless, Security National Servicing Corp., 101 Netlink and C4i Security.
“Our mission is local voices through community media. In the new world of digital media, that means fast Internet connections as well,” said Sean McLaughlin, executive director of Access Humboldt.
Access Humboldt is a nonprofit organization created in 2006 to manage cable franchise benefits for Humboldt County, Eureka, Arcata, Fortuna, Rio Dell, Blue Lake and Ferndale.
